“Incoming!!!” The booming voice of Roddy Fennick fills the confines of the bar, cutting through the boisterous hum of conversation like a knife through butter. The Sub Editor of a London Tabloid looks around expectantly.
The room full of journalists does not hesitate. We dive under tables, clutching our drinks while awaiting sounds of incoming artillery fire.
“All clear! All clear – last one up buys the beer!” The familiar Bosnian Journo war cry echoes around the bar.
“Jesus, for a moment I thought we were back in Bosnia.” Maxie Cryer mutters beside me, wiping beer off his jacket.
He was right, it is just like Bosnia. Memories flood back of my time covering the Bosnian war in Sarajevo. The Serbian Army held Sarajevo under siege for three years. I glance at Maxie my colleague who works on the same daily as I do. It is just like Bosnia, except it isn’t Bosnia – this is London. We are gathered at the ‘Snake Pit’, a favourite drinking hole off Fleet Street. The event is a holy ritual celebrated each year by journalists who were holed up in The Holiday Inn Hotel on what was known as ‘Sniper Alley’. We witnessed ethnic cleansing on a daily basis…
“Svetlana wants to see you with your arse firmly planted in her office by ten thirty.” Suzy blinks her green eyes like a tigress waking up for a snack.
Svetlana is our Editor in Chief whose grey eyes now lock into mine like a pair of heat seeking missiles. “What did your parents do in France during the occupation?”
“They both served with the French Resistance.”
“What other languages are you fluent in?” The ‘missiles’ are about to strike.
“Oh – my German is fairly strong, and I have passable Italian.”
“Nothing from the Eastern Bloc?” She uncrosses her long legs. “I want you to find a former Cold War spy reputed to be hiding in France. He commanded covert operations for MI6 in the Baltic States.” Her eyes stare at me. “Find Roger Denis for me and don’t come back without him.”
The room abruptly falls into a powerful silence…
Marc Rodin tracks his adversary across France. His journey uncovers old spies who emerge from the shadows to help him find the Master Spy.
Eye Spy is historical fiction. A true story of a fatally flawed MI6 operation.
